Hurricane Katrina has been downgraded to a Category 2.
The downgrade was made at about 7:30 a.m. EDT, around four hours after the storm made landfall.
Top sustained wind speeds were measured at 100 mph, down 20 mph from when the storm made landfall.
Hurricane Rita will continue to lose strength as it pushes forward on land – all hurricanes need warm ocean water to strengthen, on land they always weaken, and eventually die out.
