Center of Hurricane Rita Nears Land
September 23, 2005
by Kevin Caruso
The center of Hurricane Rita is just a few hours from making landfall.
It is still rated as a Category 3, and has sustained wind speeds of 120 mph.
And it now appears that the hardest hit area will not be Port Arthur, Texas, but Cameron
Parish, Louisiana. The word “Parish” means “County” in Louisiana.
Parish County is a sparsely populated area, but there are some 10,000 people throughout the parish.
